Hospital School Pathway Purpose: To ensure that pupils receiving medical care continue to access meaningful education, remain connected to their home schools, and are supported in their wider personal development. The pathway is designed to minimise disruption, safeguard continuity, and prepare pupils to transition confidently back into school or onwards to their next stage of learning.
Access to Curriculum
Wherever possible, pupils continue to follow their home school curriculum, supported through:
- Online platforms and virtual learning technologies
- Close liaison between hospital staff and home schools
- Flexible, personalised timetables planned in consultation with families and professionals
For pupils requiring long-term hospital stays, technologies such as AV1 Robots are used to maintain a virtual classroom presence, ensuring pupils stay connected with peers and routines. These may be supported by our medical needs in schools’ programme.
Where access to the home school curriculum is not possible, pupils follow the Hospital School Curriculum, which is carefully designed to:
- Align with statutory frameworks and the national curriculum
- Emphasise continuity, well-being, and independence
- Provide alternative pathways for pupils with complex needs
SEND & Personalised Provision
- Pupils with the highest levels of SEND are supported through the Engagement Model, with progress recognised in small steps across the five areas of engagement.
- Individual needs are identified and met through bespoke support plans, created in collaboration with families, medical teams, and home schools.
- Vulnerable pupils, including those without a school roll or with safeguarding concerns, are prioritised for additional support.
Enrichment & Wider Opportunities
The hospital school experience is enriched with opportunities that support both development and cultural engagement, including:
- Hospital clowns, therapy animals, and music therapy
- Themed events and recognition of national/international days
- Careers education, informed by the wide variety of roles within the hospital community
Hospital staff also extend support to siblings where appropriate and liaise with schools to make bespoke arrangements that ensure continuity of education.
